Holter Monitor

A battery operated recording device, which you wear during normal activities, that monitors your heart rhythm, much like an ECG (EKG) but for 24 hours.

Electrodes (small conducting patches) will be placed on your chest; hair may have to be shaved for proper electrode placement - tell your doctor if you are allergic to tape or adhesives.  The monitor will be started by the health care provider and you will be given instructions on what to do if electrodes become loose and how to record your activities in the diary (the diary will be provided by your health care provided).

Keep the monitor close to your body either in a pocket or in the pouch provided and worn around the shoulder.

The monitor will record your heart's electrical activity, usually for 24 hours.  It is important to keep an accurate diary so the doctor can correlate it to the monitor's findings.  The recording is analyzed, the heart activity is tabulated and compared to the activity and symptoms listed in the diary.

Avoid magnets, metal detectors, electric blankets and high voltage areas while wearing the monitor.
