EMHS Welcomes David Bertsch, M.D. David J. Bertsch, M.D., FACS returned to the Montrose area to practice General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the Endless Mountains Health Systems (formally Montrose General Hospital). Dr. Bertsch grew up in Montrose and attended the Montrose Area School District. His father, A. Monroe Bertsch, M.D., FACS was an integral member of the medical staff and practiced surgery at Montrose General Hospital. Early in his career Dr. David Bertsch was on staff at MGH and would assist his father. Dr. Bertsch is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Scranton and received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia PA. He served an internship and residency in General Surgery at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA where he was the Chief Resident of General Surgery. He furthered his specialty training by completing a fellowship in surgical oncology (cancer surgery) at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at Ohio State University, 1993-1995. From 1995-1996 at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY, Dr. Bertsch completed a fellowship in Thoracic Surgical Oncology. Dr. Bertsch has had an extensive and varied career in surgery. He has taught medical students, surgery residents and was a clinical instructor in surgery at the James Cancer Hospital and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He was the founding Medical Director for the Carlisle Hospital Cancer Center and Oncology Program. He was on the active staff of the Carlisle Hospital, a member of the Department of Surgery at Belvedere Medical Center, Carlisle, PA. Most recently he served as the Chief of the Section Surgical Oncology and Associate in the Department of General Surgery at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. Dr. Bertsch is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has published a number of research articles in peer reviewed journals. He has spoken on cancer related topics at local, sate, national and international conferences. The Medial Staff, Board of Directors and employees of EMHS are very excited Dr. Bertsch and his family has returned to the area. Dr. Bertsch will be filling a very important need within the County and his skill and experience will be a tremendous asset to the facility and the area.
